Scholes Library houses the Archives of the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. An important feature of the new building is a specially-designed, temperature-controlled facility on the third floor for storage of, and access to, the College's unique archival collections. The Archives preserve and make available research reports, correspondence, office files, original manuscripts, and photographs recording the developments and achievements of the College since it was founded in 1900. The collections were originally organized in 1981 by the first College Archivist, Susan Strong. Unique historical materials held in the Archives include the papers of Charles Fergus Binns ("Father of American Studio Pottery" and the first Director of the New York State College of Ceramics), Charles Harder, Daniel Rhodes, and other pioneers in glass and ceramic education. Scholes Library was also selected as the repository for the archives of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA).

Many artists, scholars, writers, and other researchers have found the Scholes Library Archives to be an invaluable resource for information on the history and development of ceramic art in America.  The assistance of current College Archivist Elizabeth Gulacsy has been acknowledged in a number of recent monographs and journal articles. The Archives are open Wednesdays, or by appointment.
