WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS FOR ILL USE.
U.S. copyright law (Title 17, U.S. Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Libraries are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction under certain conditions. The photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgement, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

Copyright Restrictions

Journal articles: Copies of articles from journals not owned by Scholes Library, Herrick Library, or Hinkle Library of Alfred State College may be requested through ILL. Each article request must comply with the copyright law guidelines outlined below.

Books: ILL is for books not available in one of the three Alfred libraries. Generally, loans are for one month, with an option of one renewal at the discretion of the lending library. Books cannot be borrowed to fill textbook needs for current curricula. Loans are subject to any restriction placed on their use by the lending library. Please limit your requests to three at a time.  If you must request more, please request in a priority sequence.

It is the patron's responsibility to return books by the due date indicated; failure to do so may jeopardize our borrowing privileges in the Interlibrary Loan system. Patrons are responsible for the replacement costs and/or overdue fines imposed by the lending library.  A patron's Interlibrary Loan borrowing privileges may be automatically blocked by the system, if borrowed materials are not returned within a reasonable time after overdue notification.

Other materials: Audiovisual materials, theses/dissertations, standards and government documents are more difficult to obtain than books or articles.  We will do our best to seek a loan or copy.

Fees and payments: We will try to obtain materials free of charge for our campus patrons. You will be notified if the only availability incurs a charge.  If you wish to continue with the loan, the fee may be paid by cash, check made out to Alfred University, or charged against a research account..

COPYRIGHT BORROWING RESTRICTIONS

Under the 1976 Copyright Law guidelines, there are certain limitations on what a library may obtain through Interlibrary Loan. The two most common restrictions are, during each calendar year:

a) No more than one article from any single periodical ISSUE within the last five years, and

b) No more than five articles from any single periodical TITLE within the last five years.

Any articles requested beyond these guidelines may be purchased from a vendor which pays copyright fees. The cost per article can vary from $15 to $50 plus; depending on the publisher, the vendor, the method of document transmission, and copyright fee.  If you have questions about document delivery charges or services please contact Pat LaCourse, the librarian in charge of Document Delivery services.

Scholes Library is a full participant in the Interlibrary Loan system; ILL services are provided for the students, faculty, and staff of the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University (Schools of Engineering and Art and Design).  Herrick Memorial Library provides Interlibrary Loan service for all other programs at Alfred University. Under certain conditions, ceramic and glass companies may establish industrial borrowing accounts with the library. The library also provides fee-based information services to the international ceramic and glass research community. Information on Interlibrary Loan policies and privileges may be obtained by calling the library's Interlibrary Loan Department at (607) 871-2947.
