Visual Resources
Scholes Library's Visual Resources Collection,
located on the 2nd floor, currently has 160,000 slides. About 40,000 of
these document the history of ceramic art and technology. Since 1987
all newly accessioned slides have been cataloged into a database
which now contains 50,000 records. In addition, over 9000
low-resolution digital images are linked to their catalog records for
viewing and study, including side-by-side comparison. The online
catalog can be searched through a custom-designed Web interface,
although the images can only be viewed by on-campus users. The Visual
Resources collection is supplemented by the library's subscription to ARTstor
. ARTstor is a digital library of nearly 550,000 images in the areas of
art, architecture, the humanities, and social sciences with a set of
tools to view, present and manage images for class presentations.
The
slide collection is open only on weekdays, when staff are present.
Hours are posted in the hallway outside the room each semester.
Projection equipment is housed in the library classroom (221) and
seminar room (215), and Carousel trays may be charged out from the
slide room. Please note that the library does not have projectors or
other equipment to lend for use outside of the building.
Circulation policy: The
collection is intended primarily for use by faculty and graduate
students who need slides for presentations. New grads and faculty will
receive an orientation to the facility and may then use the collection
for their research and borrowing whenever the collection is open.
Because we do not have duplicates of most slides, we request that you
return your slides within 24 hours so that they will be available to
others. Undergraduate students may borrow slides for class reports or
group presentations.
Copyright restrictions:
Slides in the Scholes collection are available for educational use
only, and duplication is prohibited. The Visual Resources Curator can
provide information on sources for buying commercially produced slides.
Faculty and graduate students may request slides to be added to the
collection. Please check the collection first to make sure the images
you need are not already available. For more information on the Visual
Resources Collection contact John Hosford, Visual Resources Curator,
